The Role of Disability Advisers

Each university employs a team of disability advisers and assistants.

Their role is to meet all students with disabilities or specific learning difficulties to carry out a full assessment of your needs. This could be before you start your degree course or at any time thereafter.

We strongly believe that you will be the person who knows the most about your particular needs, so the assessment will be carried out as an informal discussion. The disability advisers all have the expertise to take you through the options that are available to you. It may be that your Local Education Authority will require you to take part in a formal assessment of your needs, in which case your disability adviser can arrange this with you.

Once the best support package has been negotiated for you your disability adviser will advise you how to go about obtaining funding. You can carry out this process yourself if you wish, however it is part of the service offered by your disability adviser to apply for all funding on your behalf.

If at any time during your course you feel you would like more, or different support, you can make an appointment to discuss this with your disability adviser who may be able to arrange for further funding.

Other services offered by the disability advisers include arranging for you to visit the university to look at its facilities and meet key members of staff, to help you decide if it is a suitable place for you to study.

If you would like to make an appointment or send a message to a disability adviser at your university, please email them at the contact page.
