BUPAS - Scheme Reviews

Students and their support workers are surveyed annually to ascertain their satisfaction with BUPAS support and training arrangements. We have included negative as well as positive comments to demonstrate that the opinions of support workers and students are listened to and that we will take action to improve and upgrade our resources. The following are some comments from the 2002 survey:

Support workers:

  • ‘I have really enjoyed the past year, it suits me fine with what I am currently doing.’

  • ‘The Scheme is an enjoyable way to work.’

  • ‘The training was very useful, I really enjoyed it.’

  • ‘The training was useful on a personal level as well as being valuable in terms of working with students.’

  • ‘All training sessions gave an insight into students’ needs and how best to assist them.’

  • ‘ I would like shorter training and to be paid.’ (Most support workers were happy with the length of the training as it allows sufficient depth and relevance to their requirements. The rate of pay is generous, starting at £5.90 per hour and rising to £6.50 after training so we feel that this compensates for attending the training – PAS Co-ordinator).

  • ‘I would like more practical training sessions.’ (Most sessions have a practical element but this is being extended in the 2002-3 training – PAS Training Manager).

  • ‘I would like more detail about mental health issues.’ (This is being addressed in the 2002-3 training – PAS Training Manager).

Supported students:

  • ‘All of my note takers were great.’

  • ‘We had a professional relationship but the support workers also became my friends.’

  • ‘I have had really good relationships with my support workers.’

  • ‘Work produced was very professional.’

  • ‘My support workers were professional but easy to get on with.’

  • 'I found the staff and service very useful to me.’

  • ‘Although my support worker was not studying my subject, she was very helpful and knowledgeable and adapted her knowledge to the subject.’

  • ‘I haven’t got a clue about DSA.’ (From 2002 all students will be directed to the web site for further information about their DSAs – PAS Co-ordinator.)

  • ‘I would like the same support worker for all my sessions.’ (In practice this is difficult because of timetable clashes. If a student needs a lot of support it may be better to spread this between 2 or more support workers. We always look at students’ needs individually – PAS Co-ordinator)
